What is Proof of Marriage?

After a marriage ceremony is performed in Clark County, the marriage officiant who performed the ceremony will complete the certificate by indicating the date and location of marriage, names of the witnesses, and the officiant’s information and signature. The officiant is legally responsible for delivering the completed marriage certificate to the Clerk’s Office within ten calendar days.

Once received by our office, the marriage certificate will be filed within one or two business days. Once filed, a certified copy of the marriage certificate (also known as proof of marriage) will be available for purchase.

Proof of marriage is usually obtained by the couple. However, some officiants, chapels, and third-party solicitors provide this as an extra service and may charge additional fees. The Clerk’s Office does not solicit the sale of any documents filed in this office. If you receive a phone call or email solicitation, please note that it is from someone not affiliated with our office.

Proof of marriage can be provided in the form of a certified marriage certificate (the most common and widely accepted official document) or a certified abstract of marriage (a less commonly requested official document as it is typically only required by some United States agencies and some foreign countries). While a certified marriage certificate is usually sufficient for a citizen of the United States, all couples are encouraged to understand the legal documents needed for the various government agencies and organizations in their country that will require original certified proof of their marriage.

Some governments require Apostille verification for certified proof of marriage. Information on Apostilles can be obtained from the Nevada Secretary of State's Office. Our office does not provide this service.
