Election: Important Dates

2016 Federal/State Elections
Federal/State Elections are in even-numbered years. In 2009, the Nevada Legislature changed the date of the Federal/State Primary Election to the second Tuesday in June of each even-numbered year. The General Election date remains the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The dates listed below are based on current law and are subject to change depending on the outcome of the current Nevada state legislative session.

Last Day for Candidates for Partisan Offices to Change Affiliation with a Major Party: No person may be a candidate of a major political party for partisan office in 2016 if he or she changed political affiliation to Democrat or Republican on a Voter Registration Application in Nevada or in any other state after December 30, 2015. (NRS 293.176)

January 2 - June 3, 2016

Independent Candidate Petition Filing: Period during which an independent candidate must submit his or her petition of candidacy to the appropriate filing officer for verification. Prior to circulating the petition, a copy must be submitted to the filing officer. Contact the Secretary of State for more information. (NRS 293.200(1)(a))

Judicial Candidate Filing: Period during which judicial candidates for State Supreme Court, Nevada Court of Appeals, District Court (including Family Division) and Justice of the Peace may file to run for office in 2016. (NRS 293.177(a))

Last Day for Judicial Candidate Name Changes: Last day judicial candidates may change how their name appears on the ballot. (NAC 293.081)

Last Day for Withdrawal or Rescinding of Judicial Candidacy: Last day judicial candidates may withdraw their candidacy or rescind withdrawal of candidacy. (NRS 293.202)

PRESIDENTIAL CAUCUSES

Pursuant to Nevada law, Nevada does not conduct Primary Elections to select Presidential candidates. Instead,major political parties will hold caucuses in the beginning of 2016 at dates, times, and locations that they will determine. The Clark County Election Department is not involved with these caucuses.

All Voters Registered in Clark County


A Primary Election is a preliminary (nominating) election to select, when necessary, Democratic, Republican and nonpartisan candidates who will run in the General Election contests (except candidates for special district offices because they will only appear in the General Election). The direct vote of the people selects the candidates, rather than votes of convention delegates. In State/Federal Elections, Nevada has CLOSED Primary elections. (NRS 293.257)

Mail/Absentee Ballot Request Deadline: Last day for the Election Department to RECEIVE WRITTEN mail ballot requests. (NRS 293.315)
 
NOVEMBER 8, 2016, GENERAL ELECTION (FEDERAL/STATE)

Candidates who receive the most votes in a General Election are elected to office. You may vote for all offices and questions on the ballot for your precinct, regardless of your party affiliation.
