The Museum will host an evening Exhibit Opening Reception and Gallery Talk on Friday, August 9, 5 - 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, light refreshments will be served.
The Clark County Museums newest exhibit Top to Toe: A Look at American Hats and Shoes takes a look at the changing trends in style and fashion over the past century. Carefully selected hats and shoes from the museums’ collections interpret attitudes from the Gilded Age through the Jazz Age, to the Space Age and today’s Digital Age. Whether it is the classic wool felt fedoras of the ’20s, the veil-draped millinery of the ’40s, Chuck Taylor Converse All Stars of childhood, or two-toned vinyl platform shoes from the ‘70s, these artifacts present fashion-forward statements reflecting contemporary America’s confidence, enthusiasm and optimism.
A selection of accessories such as a shoe polish stand from the 1800s and hat blocks from the 1940s provide additional context. The Clark County Museum includes hats and shoes in many of its exhibit displays, but has never featured them as a major exhibit, until now.
The exhibit also includes hats from fraternal societies, specialty hats from Native American tribes, and workers’ hats, including those worn by construction workers and policemen. Hat boxes are also set for the display.
Advertisements for shoes and hats and expressions such as “If the shoe fits, wear it” or “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world” round out the exhibit.
The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Entrance to the exhibit is included in the price of admission. Adult $2, Youth, 3 – 17, and Senior, 55+, $1.
