Clark County Commissioners Recognize Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC For Being Named Among Top Five in the Country

Clark County Commissioner and Chairman of the UMC Board of Trustees Lawrence Weekly will honor Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC for its extraordinary nationwide ranking as one of only a handful of hospitals to earn the highest rating in a Consumer Reports study.

Commissioner Weekly will formally recognize Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC’s Pediatric Intensivists, physicians, nurses and clinical staff at the Clark County Commission meeting on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 9:15 am.

“The skilled dedication that these nurses and doctors have shown to caring for these extremely ill patients should be commended,” said Commissioner Weekly.  “So many children are healthy and back at home with their families today because of the high quality of treatment that they received at our Children’s Hospital.”

The Consumer Reports study investigated bloodstream infection rates for pediatric intensive care patients by using publically reported data.

“Children in our intensive care unit are critically ill or have life-threatening injuries.   We have a responsibility to follow strict procedures and established best practices and the results are paying off for our patients,” said Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC’s Medical Director Dr. Meena Vohra.  “Our pediatric intensive care unit had zero bloodstream infections in 2010 and the same holds true for last year.”

Consumer Reports suggests parents should ask about infection rates at hospitals where they bring their children noting that both parents and hospitals can take steps to prevent them.

“We follow a detailed checklist during catheter insertions and dressing changes and our staff is expertly trained on how to take care of critically ill pediatric patients because we believe that a hospital acquired infection is never an acceptable outcome,” said Vohra.

Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC provides patients the highest level of care anywhere in Nevada with the only designated Pediatric Trauma Center, the only hospital in Nevada staffed around the clock with in-hospital, Board Certified Pediatric Critical Care and Emergency Medicine Physicians, and as the only hospital to offer pediatric burn care and transplant services.   Children’s Hospital of Nevada is also the only hospital in Nevada to be recognized as an Associate Member of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, or NACHRI.

“This Consumer Reports study ranks Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC above many other highly acclaimed children’s hospitals in the country.  To be the only hospital on the west coast rated at the top is a tribute to the commitment we have to caring for the children in our community,” said UMC CEO Brian Brannman.  “This study is another reason why parents can depend on the high quality of care we provide for their children.”
