North Las Vegas Justice Court to Host Free Booster Seat Event
In recognition of Black History Month, the third annual Free Booster Seats for Those in Need event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 9 a.m. until noon, in the parking lot of the North Las Vegas Justice Court at 2428 N. Martin Luther King Boulevard, which is on the northeast corner of Carey and MLK.
This event is being co-sponsored by North Las Vegas Justice Court Chief Judge Natalie Tyrrell, Safe Kids Clark County, and the Black Ministers of Southern Nevada.
“Our collective belief is to honor history and protect the future,” Chief Judge Natalie Tyrrell said. “Protecting the future begins with protecting our children.”
Safe Kids Clark County is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing accidental injury and death among children ages 14 and under. According to Safe Kids, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for African American children under 14; African American children ages 5 through 12 are nearly three times more likely to die in a motor vehicle crash than any other group of children; and African American high school students are 50 percent less likely to buckle up than white or Hispanic students.
The goal of this program is to increase public awareness regarding vehicle occupant protection for children ages 4 to 12; increase booster seat usage in children ages 4 to 8; and encourage all children 12 and younger to ride in the back seat, safely away from airbags. Nevada law requires that a child must ride in a child safety seat or booster seat if the child is less than 6 years old and weighs less than 60 pounds. Researchers tell us that children should be in booster seats until they are at least 8 years old, 80 pounds, and 4 feet 9 inches tall. Adult seat belts do not offer maximum protection until a person reaches those height, weight, and age minimums. While booster seats have been shown to reduce injuries, 86 percent of children ages 6 to 8 are still unsafely riding with adult seat belts.
The free booster seats are designed for children who are 4 years of age or older who weigh at least 40 pounds. To receive the free booster seat, you must bring your child and vehicle to ensure proper installation. There are a limited number of booster seats available. The event will be first come, first served, so early arrival is recommended.
