Tuesday, May 26 - Friday, July 17, 2015
Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89121

Artist reception on Friday, May 29 from 5:30-7:30pm

“Wunder Kammer,” Kim Johnson's new mixed-media exhibit highlighting the wonders of our environment, will be on display from Tuesday, May 26 through Friday, July 17, 2015 at Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. An artist reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 29.

The exhibit's title refers to the cabinets of curiosities, precursors to modern-day museums, popular from the Renaissance to the Victorian era. The cabinet or room displays featured diverse collections of manmade, scientific and natural wonders. Artist Kim Johnson's work also spans these categories, intertwining medical/scientific found objects and organic materials within her art. Physically and thematically, the sculptures and paintings of “Wunder Kammer” mirror this junction with science and the environment, depicting similarities between the micro and macroscopic worlds.

The artist states, “A curiosity for the natural world and its mysteries drives me to explore a deeper level of understanding through experimenting and creating through art. I am interested in exploring the intersection between the environment and our physical and emotional reaction to it, which ultimately raises awareness and appreciation for the unknown and the natural environment within and around us.”

Kim Johnson earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She has exhibited in numerous Las Vegas solo and group shows, including, most recently, “Paracosm” at Blackbird Studios, “Emergent Environment” at Jesse Metcalf Gallery and “Year of the Goat”at Mayor's Gallery. In 2013, she was a selected artist in the public art project Zap! 5, located at Desert Breeze Park.
