Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Dr. Las Vegas, NV 89121
Artist reception on Friday, August 21 from 5:30-7:30pm
"Container Theory", Marlene Siu's new series of large-scale color photographs, will be on display from Tuesday, August 18th through Friday, October 9th, 2015 at Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. An artist reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 21.
In "Container Theory" Siu proposes, "How do you organize people and places? Not just memorable moments captured in casual photographs but the cumulative memories that construct the idea of a person or place.
The artist states, "This series is the outcome of a constant desire to merge my practice of sculpture and photography into a single object. The constructed object represents my idea of that person or place through a container while, simultaneously complementing and disrupting the photographic composition it is placed in."
Siu sees containers as symbols of organization and preservation. Her containers hold intangible objects. The series will represent the artist's "impractical effort to organize and preserve the people and places around her."
Marlene Siu earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She has exhibited in numerous Las Vegas solo and group shows, including, most recently, "Space/Time/Engagement" Project Space, "Relative Perspectives" Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery, and "Chinatown" Radkisser Gallery.
Marlene Siu was a Co-Founder/Curator/Installation Consultant of 5th Wall Gallery located in Emergency Arts on Fremont.
