Clark County Accepting Applications to Fill Vacancy for State Senate District 4

Clark County is accepting applications from citizens interested in representing Nevada State Senate District 4, occupied by Kelvin Atkinson until he resigned Tuesday. Applications must be filed by Monday, March 11, at noon.

The application may be found at www.ClarkCountyNV.gov. Once completed, it may be emailed to Katie Walpole at Kathleen.Walpole@ClarkCountyNV.gov or delivered to Katie Walpole in the County Manager's Office on the 6th floor of the Clark County Government Center at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway in downtown Las Vegas.

Under state law, the County Commission fills vacancies in the state Legislature. The appointee must be 21 years old, reside in the district he or she is seeking to represent, and be of the same political party as the resigning member. Atkinson is a Democrat. The appointee will serve until the election in November 2020, when voters will select their representative for the seat.

Prospective appointees are encouraged to confirm whether they reside in State Senate District 4 through the Nevada Legislature's website. The map for State Senate District 4 is here: https://www.leg.state.nv.us/Division/Research/Districts/Reapp/2011/Final/Senate/SEN2011_District4_11x17.pdf.

Once the application period closes, County staff will review the submitted applications to ensure that candidates meet the qualifications for the office. Then a list of qualified applicants and their applications will be forwarded to members of the Clark County Commission for the final decision at a public meeting March 15 at 1 p.m. in the Commission Chambers at the Clark County Government Center.
