On Thursday, Jan. 2, at 6 p.m. Clark County Poet Laureate Heather Lang-Cassera will host a poetry reading at the Winchester Dondero Cultural Center to celebrate the installation of a little free library. This event, Little Free Library & Poetry Reading, is free and open to the public.
"As members of our community contemplate self care, growth, and love in this new year, I hope they will consider reading more poetry," said Lang-Cassera. "It's a perfect way to disconnect from work stress and screen time and to learn more about ourselves."
Community members are invited to this event to read their poems, or poems by others who they admire, during an open-mic style evening. Listeners are also warmly welcomed and can attend without poems to read. This is a family-friendly event.
After the reading, community members will be invited to bring home a few new-to-them poetry books—for free! Although optional, community members may also bring books of poetry to donate to the new little free library.
"I hope that this little free library, located at a community center, will serve as a place where folks can discover a new book or two," says Lang-Cassera. "Community members can take books home, for free, no strings attached."
Although this little library will run according to community donations of books, which can be deposited directly into the little library, the poet laureate will initially stock the library with a variety of poetry books. Lang-Cassera will be donating a number of gently used poetry books from her own collection, and a number of children's poetry books will be included, as well, with thanks to both Clark County Poet Laureate funding and The Writer's Block.
The little free library will reside just inside of the front doors at the Winchester Dondero Cultural Center, located at 3130 McLeod Drive in Las Vegas. Its hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
