Holiday Favorite Gets Jazzy Interpretation

‚Äč       Alan Lawson's Little Big Band, made up of 11 of Southern Nevada's finest musicians, will perform Lawson's jazz-inflected arrangements of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" and other holiday favorites at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 17 at Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, just north of Desert Inn Road. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 on concert day, and may be purchased at the center or online at www.ClarkCountyNV.gov/parksregistration.

Lawson is a veteran Las Vegas clarinetist, saxophonist, arranger and composer. He has performed with the Baltimore Symphony, the Las Vegas Pops, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, 40 Broadway shows, six Jerry Lewis National Telethons and Cheap Trick's "Sgt. Pepper" Orchestra at the Las Vegas Hilton and Paris Hotel/Casinos. He also has performed for stars such as Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett, and his last show, before his career was interrupted by his current fight with cancer, was "Sinatra Dance With Me" at the Wynn.

The Little Big Band includes the Show Stoppers sax section: Dan Philippus and Bill Leary, clarinets and alto saxes; Dave Stambaugh, soprano sax; Marty Radunz, tenor sax and clarinet; and Adam Schroeder, baritone sax and bass clarinet. Gary Cordell and Gil Kaupp are on trumpets; Nathan Tanouye, trombone; Greg Bosler, piano; Ken Seiffert, bass; and Mike Mechem, drums.

Lawson led a highly popular concert of his jazz and classical music with three trios at Winchester in April. The music of "The Nutcracker," of course, is performed everywhere during the holidays, but Lawson's jazzy interpretations breathe fresh air into Tchaikovsky's beloved music.
