Paying the Monthly Obligation

Majority of all child support payments are made through income withholding from an employer.

When a child support order is entered into our automated system an income withholding is sent to the non-custodial parent employer. This happens immediately and automatically in all cases if the employer is known.

We can also collect from other monthly income sources such as unemployment, social security benefits, military and retirement benefits.


How Income Withholding Works

  1. The Family Support Division receives information about your employer.
  2. Your employer receives an "Order to Withhold Income for Child Support” from the Family support division.
  3. Your payment amount is deducted from your paycheck.
  4. Your employer sends the payment directly to us (each pay period).
  5. We process your payment and send it to the custodial parent.

Income withholding ensures payments are complete and on time. However, it may take your employer a few weeks to process the income withholding order. Until that time, you are responsible for making your child support payments.

In most situations, there will also be a requirement to enroll the child(ren) in an employer sponsored health plan.
