Clark County Fire Academy
Building the Foundation for a Career in the Clark County Fire Department
The Clark County Fire Academy is where commitment becomes capability. Our academy is designed to prepare recruit firefighters for a long, safe, and successful career in the fire service physically, mentally, and professionally.
Recruit academies are conducted in accordance with NFPA 1001: Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, alongside the operational guidelines and expectations of the Clark County Fire Department. Upon successful completion, recruits are prepared to test for Nevada State Firefighter I and II certification.
What to Expect
Academy Structure
- Conducted Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Schedules may vary based on training objectives, evolutions, and educational opportunities
- Recruit academies run approximately 20 weeks
Classroom Instruction
Recruits will participate in structured classroom sessions covering:
- Fire behavior and building construction
- Fire suppression tactics and strategy
- Safety, survival, and operational readiness
- Department policies and operational procedures
Instruction is based on IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting, 7th Edition, with regular testing and performance evaluations.
Hands-On Fireground Training
The academy emphasizes practical, real-world skill development. Training evolutions include, but are not limited to:
- Hose deployment and water supply
- Search and rescue operations
- Ladder operations
- Vehicle extrication
- SCBA donning, doffing, and air management
- Power tools and forcible entry
- High-rise and commercial operations
- Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations
- Hazardous materials awareness and operations
- Swift water rescue fundamentals
Recruits should expect progressive challenges designed to mirror the demands of an emergency response.
Physical Readiness & Conditioning
Physical fitness is a daily expectation, not an afterthought. Recruits will participate in structured cardiovascular and strength training to build endurance, resilience, and injury prevention habits consistent with the demands of the profession.
Year-Round Readiness
Recruit academies may begin at any time of the year spring, summer, fall, or winter. Candidates must be prepared to train and perform in all weather and temperature conditions, reflecting the realities of emergency response in Clark County.
