Founded in 1980’s

El Mundo was Nevada’s first and largest Spanish-language newspaper, founded by Eddie Escobedo in 1980. He collaborated with Hank Greenspun. The newspaper was a platform for issues most important to the hispanic community, but were not available in English language media.

Founded in 1981 by Edmundo "Eddie" Escobedo Sr. and his son Eddie Escobedo Jr., El Mundo became one of Las Vegas’s most important Spanish-language newspapers, dedicated to the local Hispanic community. At its peak, it printed up to 45,000 copies each week and featured more than 100 pages of community news, sports, weddings, quinceañeras, and cultural events, earning a reputation for its deeply local focus.

The paper was produced from the Escobedo Professional Plaza, one of Las Vegas’s first Hispanic business centers, a hub for media, business, and civic life. Edmundo Escobedo Sr., a U.S. Air Force veteran and Mexican-American community pioneer, helped shape Southern Nevada’s Hispanic media and political landscape.

• Edmundo “Eddie” Escobedo, 1932-2010
  • Eddie Escsobedo was born in Torreon Coahuila, Mexico, before moving to the U.S. as a teenager. Residing in Nevada for 55 years, he was an influential businessman and supporter of various local Hispanic and civic organizations in Las Vegas. He served as President and Founder of the National Association of Hispanic Publications. Beyond his work with the El Mundo newspaper and Escobedo Professional Plaza, Eddie continuously supported the community by giving away thousands of dollars in scholarships, computer classes, and toys to children at Christmas.
