Women of Clark County

Maude Frazier

1981 - 1963

“I was well aware that when a woman takes over work done by a man, she has to do it better, has more of it to do, and usually for less pay.”

In 1906, Maude Frazier left Wisconsin to teach in Genoa, Nevada. She taught in various small towns before becoming a school administrator. In 1927, she became the superintendent of the Las Vegas Union School District, serving until 1947. She was elected to the state legislature and joined the Education Committee in 1950, where she worked on school system reorganization and supported establishing a community college in southern Nevada. In 1962, at age 81, the governor of Nevada appointed Frazier interim lieutenant governor of Nevada, the highest state-level position held by a woman in Nevada to date.
