HISTORY OF THE WALNUT RECREATION CENTER

Since 1998, the Walnut Recreation Center has been the only Clark County recreation/resource facility in the lower northeast area of Las Vegas.  It started as a 3-wide trailer named the Walnut-Cecile Community Center.  The community center offered free outreach recreation to more than 1000 kids from surrounding neighborhoods as well as provide recreation to approximately 100 kids at the trailer site daily.  We used Clark County vans to offer outreach recreation to the neighborhood children in surrounding apartment complexes.  In these areas, the recreation need was tremendous, and our outreach program was very successful.  As a result, in 2002, Clark County invested over 10 million dollars, using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, to build a 41,000 sq. ft, full-service recreation center for this and surrounding communities.

The present Walnut Recreation Center offers a variety of free and paid programs and services.  Since its inception, the Walnut has grown to accommodate the 89115 community, a good portion of North Las Vegas, and the Nellis Air Force Base.  The ultimate goal for Walnut is to develop a "community campus" that meets all of the needs, recreation and resources in the northeast area.  By assessing and fulfilling the needs of this community, this feat can be accomplished.  The future for Walnut is bright.
