About the Exhibition:

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery and celebrates the legacies of those who fought for freedom and those who continue to fight against racial injustice. Juneteenth is celebrated each year through parades, family reunions, and barbecues. An assortment of food- some red, some not- is shared for these celebrations including greens, black-eyed peas, grilled meats, and red-hued foods such as watermelon, red velvet cake, and red punch. In many West African cultures, the color, red symbolizes strength, spirituality, and life and death. Red foods and drinks have been a major way of commemorating the legacy of resilience. The importance of red foods and non-red foods can be traced back to the continent of Africa. The exhibition explores food as a part of culture, family traditions, and to celebrate the culinary history of the African diaspora.

Along with food-themed art, there is a side exhibition of art that reflects on heritage, identity, and culture.
