Sam Davis Originally from Florida Davis received his BFA from the University of Florida in Creative Photography. It was at the University of Florida that he found himself greatly influenced by the rich legacy of the highly creative and surrealist photographers whom he interacted with both as a student and professional. It was not until he moved to Las Vegas Nevada to pursue, and later complete, a MFA at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas that he began his own exploration of the spectacular. Previously focusing his efforts on more traditional documentary photography Davis found that the desert and the history he went there to explore were far too vast to express by conventional means. Still ardent about the use of film over digital Davis began making images that referenced his love of family history (his father had once been a participant in an atomic test during the 1950’s). His images combine obscure technology, science fiction and childhood fantasy to call into question notions regarding memory, nostalgia imagination and pulp/cyber folklore. Davis creates images that he hopes will cause the viewer to pause and question and at the same time provide a way into another frame of thought-to proactively imagine.

Sam Davis currently lives in Los Angeles and teaches full time at The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
