Audrey Barcio: "Continual Eventual"
Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas, NV
Monday, February 1 - Friday, March 4, 2016
Reception on Monday, February 5 from 6-8 pm with artist talk at 6:30 pm
Audrey Barcio's "Continual Eventual" installation draws upon the Las Vegas architecture and its constant competition with the surrounding desert mountains. The artwork will be on view from February 1 through March 4 at the Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery, 550 S. Grand Central Parkway. A reception will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, February 5, with an artist talk at 6:30 pm.
"It has been said that if you want to know what is important to a city, look at the tallest landmark/monument built and that will guide you to what the city holds dear," said Barcio. "Continual Eventual" is an exhibit composed of seven mirrored plexi triangular towers. The group of towers (each seven feet in height) will look miniature compared to the cavernous space of the Clark County Government Center Rotunda. The installation will reflect in scale our own valley's relationship to the every-changing architecture of Las Vegas. Barcio hopes the exhibition's impact upon the viewer will confront our associations with architecture and examine the role large-scale architecture has influence over past and future generations.
Audrey Barcio examines our relationship to the future and the lasting impact our actions will have on it. Working with contemporary materials, she gives abstract forms new layers of significance while transforming our relationships with the familiar and recognizable into the surreal.
Audrey Barcio is a current MFA candidate at UNLV. She has exhibited in numerous local and national group shows, including, most recently, Out of Vegas at CCA, Oakland, CA, In the Desert at Nevada Humanities, Las Vegas, Art Tales at the Life is Beautiful Festival, Las Vegas, GLAMFA at UC Long Beach, CA. Barcio is an independent curator and blogs for Field Projects Gallery in New York. She served as a director of an artist-run non-profit and intern for PS1 MoMA.
