COLLIDE adds the often overlooked aspects of light and color to the center of a public space. It is intended to elicit a playful yet meditative experience within the formal atmosphere of a government building. Visitors to the rotunda are greeted by a large kaleidoscope sculpture, designed to be viewed with the help of a stranger or friend. Plexiglas, a material generally used for industrial purposes, does not typically grab our attention despite its omnipresence in our urban spaces. Constructed in Plexiglas and framed by wood, COLLIDE provides an explicit visual experience to the viewer, in hopes that they will reconsider the overlooked implicit properties of light and color within our daily environments.
Holly Rae Vaughn is a Las Vegas-based artist whose work often explores the visual effects produced by combinations of light refracted through colored material. Utilizing her experience as a large scale fabricator, her most recent public sculpture, GEM, is constructed of an array of Plexiglas sheets in steel frames. Sunlight produces blocks of colorful shadows through the Plexi, demonstrating the full visible light spectrum. Thematically her work is whimsical and marked by simple but visually striking installations.
The Clark County Government Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on weekends. For more information call the Public Art at (702) 455-8685.
