exhibit-winchester-lifeindeath-Patricia-Cortes-Guadarrama.jpg Artists were invited to research and explore how Día de los Muertos is celebrated across Mexico and by the diaspora abroad. This multigenerational celebration serves as a remembrance of the dead and a joyous honoring of life, both lived and living.

This exhibition reflects that Día de los Muertos is a deeply rooted cultural tradition filled with color, humor, and reverence. The featured works honor ancestral memory while embracing subversive, innovative, and celebratory interpretations of life and death.

The Life in Death Festival, will be held November 1–2, 2025, from 4:00–9:00 PM, featuring performances by Mexican dance troupes and readings of “calaveras”, humorous poems written “in memory” of the living, offering good-natured reflections on life and mortality.

In the Mexican tradition, families and community groups have built ofrendas (altars) glowing with candlelight, adorned with food, drink, and cherished objects once loved by the departed. These elaborate installations serve as both works of art and heartfelt tributes, reminding us that death defines life and should never be feared.

Patricia Cortes Guadarrama is a career diplomat with over 25 years in the Mexican Foreign Service. She holds degrees and diplomas from ITESM, the Instituto Matías Romero, COLMEX, and UC San Diego. She has served in the Netherlands, Spain, and the United States, focusing on economic, cultural, and community affairs. Since 2024, she has been the Consul of Mexico in Las Vegas, leading initiatives that empower the Mexican community in Nevada and strengthen partnerships with local authorities and organizations.
