Allison Streater will display her introspective series of mixed-media collages titled “Blinded: Awoken” from Tuesday, March 24 through Friday, May 15, 2015 at Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, just north of Desert Inn Road. An artist reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27.

The blinded series began in 2008 and features females cut from fashion catalogs wearing material possessions Streater desired, but could not afford. Snipped from their catalog scenery, the models now reside in settings created by the artist to better describe her personal story. Thread or paper placed over the models’ eyes conceals their identity and also represents a sort of blindness the artist was experiencing: an inability to see past trivial distractions, subconsciously held back from living a more fulfilling life by insecurity and fear.

In contrast to the “Blinded” works, Streater will also present new, larger compositions featuring images of the artist “awoken.” Combining digital photography, collage, paint, printmaking and found objects, the more recent artwork uses the same materials as the first to project a wholly different tone. The two series seen together in “Blinded: Awoken” document a journey in learning to accept oneself through self-awareness.

Allison Streater is a native Las Vegan and an arts graduate of the University of Nevada Las Vegas and the College of Southern Nevada. Streater’s artwork has been shown nationally, including an exhibit at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C., and locally at Alios Gallery, Gateway Motel, Emergency Arts Factory, UNLV’s Grant Hall, Ortego Gallery and Sahara West Library Gallery.
