“Vistas and Viewpoints” unites two of Bobbie Ann Howell’s signature art processes, collaged photography and cut-paper drawings--and the combinations do not stop there. The exhibit runs from Tuesday, January, 21 through Friday, March 14, 2014 at the Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, just north of Desert Inn Road. An artist reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 24.
Essentially a show of intersections, Howell uses both the photography and cut-paper drawings to combine separate images and find harmonious elements among them. All of the artwork in this exhibit derived from influences found within the Nevada landscape; the places of intersection between landscape and urbanization, the edges of the desert and the seeping lines of progress so dramatically evident on the desert crust once it has been scrapped and reassembled. Patterns and symbols are created to form compositions inspired by the natural and built environments, and the range of things that impact human perceptions. Howell has created poetic visual artwork by exploring contrasting textures, patterns, colors, and ideas. The artist’s skill at literally slicing up and reconnecting the Southern Nevada environment is intended to beg a second look and maybe even alter the observer’s viewpoint.
Bobbie Ann Howell a native Nevadan, attended school in Indian Springs and Las Vegas. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Abilene Christian University, Abilene, TX, and her Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Drawing from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, IL.
