Tuesday, May 21 – Friday, July 12, 2013
Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89121
Artist Reception/Performance: Friday, May 31, 5:30 - 7:30pm
Jesse Smigel’s multimedia installation at the Winchester Gallery places the viewer in an environment comprised of objects that would be aboard a "Fleet" vessel in the year 4013. Some of these items are propaganda posters, a war tribute mural, an infomercial, animal taxidermy, and a concept model Fleet vessel. An amalgam of 70's, 80's, and 90's science fiction movie references and cat-related humor, the exhibit is built on the premise that humankind will pollute itself off the planet. Although this vision of the future could seem bleak, Smigel believes there may be a silver lining in cats, that if an entire civilization were to restructure its prime directive around cats, proper resource distribution and recycling, and smiling, perhaps the future wouldn't look so sad. Smigel says, “One might think of it as THX 1138 meets the Aristocats.”
