Jenny Holzer - 2009

Embedding Truisms in a Luxury Landscape

Perhaps the most ambitious and permanent of Holzer’s contributions to Las Vegas is her VEGAS installation (2009), a massive 266-foot-long LED sculpture at the North Valet of ARIA Resort & Casino, part of MGM Resorts’ CityCenter development. Suspended from the ceiling and winding above the roadway, Holzer’s illuminated text flows in white diodes, both welcoming and confronting guests as they enter this luxury compound. It is a “luxury,” Holzer remarked, “when the light gets loose.”

This work stands out not only for its scale and permanence but for the way it dissolves the boundary between art and architecture. Holzer’s scrolling phrases—from her Truisms and other text series—blur with the surrounding spectacle. But their content disrupts: aphorisms about power, desire, violence, beauty, and truth are injected into a space that typically traffics in fantasy. Rather than oppose the visual vernacular of the Strip, Holzer’s texts integrate with it, transforming it from within.

“I like to put content where people are already looking,” Holzer said. “People come to Las Vegas to look—to gawk, even—so public art here makes sense.” Her work doesn’t fight the cacophony of Las Vegas; it leverages it. In this sense, Holzer becomes both inheritor and disruptor of the city's history of signage. Her works belong to the city’s circulatory system: fast, visible, immediate. They meet viewers where they are—at the valet, in the airport, under the neon canopy—and offer something unexpected: a thought. Holzer has embedded her language into Las Vegas’s visual DNA. Her work doesn’t oppose the city—it becomes part of it, complicates it, makes it better. In doing so, she confirms that even in the brightest city in the world, a few words, well-placed, can change how we see.
