Made in the Shade
“Made in the Shade”
Domsky Glass Studio
SCOPE
Clark County Parks and Recreation Department’s Public Arts Office opened a Request for Qualifications back in 2022 looking for an artist to facilitate an engaging arts education workshop to youth, then design, fabricate and deliver a sculpture to the Von Tobel Middle School Park. The goal was to create a unique design that the children in the area will appreciate and feel ownership of.
DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK
Made of steel and powder coated in celestial colors, Made in the Shade stands as a beacon of empowerment phrases that the Von Tobel Middle School art students helped identify for the children to explore. During the daylight hours, sunlight casts through the design openings creating shadow patterns of stars, planets, and words on the ground below. The viewer, while standing under the sculpture and looking upwards, will see the works through the cut-outs.
HISTORY OF SITE
The Von Tobel neighborhood is rich in tradition as well as culture. Over many years, the families who have come and gone have helped shaped Von Tobel into a diverse environment. The community holds family values in high regard. They are known to support each other through thick and thin. Given the opportunity, the people of the Von Tobel community will demonstrate their drive and spirit, making this neighborhood a valued part of Las Vegas.
ARTIST
Artists Barbara and Larry Domsky have collaborated on large scale art projects since 1990. Both began their artistic careers in their early 20s and pursued hands-on education by way of theatrical fabrication on early Las Vegas stage shows. Barbara’s career took her in the direction of glass design and Larry’s career led to metal fabrication. By 1994, they had successfully completed several large-scale commissions and together opened Domsky Glass Studio to focus on artistic glass and metal fabrication. From that time forward, the Domsky’s work has been commissioned globally with completed art projects in 18 countries to date. Additionally, their work can be found throughout the United States, from coast to coast and throughout the city of Las Vegas. In 2023, they were selected as representing glass artists for America and South Africa at the United Nations. Showings of their work have been sponsored by Disney and The Guggenheim Museum and televised on National Geographic and Vegas PBS. Additional Las Vegas public sculptures by Barbara and Larry Domsky can be found at Harry Reid International Airport Terminal 3, Symphony Park and Las Vegas Municipal Court House. Domsky Glass Studio and DG Gallery can be found in the heart of the Las Vegas industrial area. For more information, visit www.DomskyGlass.com
COLLABORATORS
The Von Tobel Middle School art students helped come up with the words last year when Domsky Art invited them to their glass shop to create unique glass pieces.
DEDICATION
