Full Scope Professional Education Workshop - Amanda Browder

On September 21 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM PTD, followed by an hour-long question and answer period, guest speaker Amanda Browder will share her experience with public art. Amanda Browder is a Brooklyn-based artist who makes large-scale fabric installations. She will be speaking about her history as an artist and will discuss some of the details of her creative process. In particular, she will describe some of the challenges of sustaining a public art practice but highlight how embracing community collaboration for making short term public art projects can evoke remarkable expressions of engagement and creativity. Unlike a solitary artist with the burden of personal identity baked into their art, Browder will discuss the artistic freedom that comes from a collective making process and how the piece lives on in the network of person-to-person relationships among the members of the local community. Evidence of the intrinsically social component of her work are the communal processes that can emerge from the community of volunteers working on the piece. Recent examples are group story-telling and sharing of personal histories, open sewing circles, and the unexpected documenting of the people and material of the work. Finally she will discuss her history of collaboration with different sponsors, and how those relationships have fostered a greater long-term connection between citizens, local art groups and institutions such as museums and universities.

About Amanda Browder Born in Missoula, MT in 1976, Amanda Browder received an MFA/MA from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, producing large-scale fabric installations for building exteriors and other public sites. She works primarily with the community, and sources all of her material from local donations. In 2019, she covered 6 buildings as part of Art Prize:Project 1 and was named the Transformation Fellow at UNLV. Projects this year include: St. Charles Arts Council in Illinois, and finishing delayed work due to the pandemic in Milwaukee and White Plains. She received her first NEA grant in 2016 with the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY. Photos and reviews have appeared in New York Times to Fiber Art Magazine and she is a founder of the art podcast, www.badatsports.com which has led to the podcast Sewing Community https://sewingcommunity.buzzsprout.com/ stories of volunteers who sew.
