Burning Man : September 2025

Full Scope Workshop for September invited artists Caroline Kamm and Rick Martinez, Lena Alani, and Nancy Foster. These artists recently participated in Burning Man 2025. They shared their experiences on how they found out about Burning Man, how they applied to participate, their fabrication process, and about the event itself. Join in the conversation between first time burner, returning burner, and experienced burners to learn more about the event.

Since the first Burn in 1986, Burning Man has evolved from a single annual event into a global cultural movement advancing a more creative, connected and thriving society. Burning Man Project is the nonprofit in service to the global culture of Burning Man, working year-round and around the world to bring people together in real life to do amazing things. From neighborhood meet-ups and civic art projects to their signature annual gathering in Nevada, a temporary city of more than 70,000 humans, they work to create and support environments that foster authentic human connection, creativity and innovation

Meet Our Speakers

Lena Alani is a circus artist, mover, creative force, and lifelong lover of all things handmade and colorful. With over 15 years of experience performing and coaching in the circus arts, including Cirque du Soleil (“Beatles Love” by Cirque Du Soleil show), she has spent much of her life soaring through the air, creating art in many forms and telling stories through movement and dance. For Lena ART is the only way to live purposefully and authentically.

Nancy is a multi-disciplinary artist combining her professional and educational experience with her desire to bring large scale fabric centric art to Burning Man. Professionally, she runs FoMo Design Lab, her studio for production design, costume and prop making and sewn goods prototyping in Las Vegas, NV. She has an AAS in Apparel Design and a BFA in fiber art. Her art projects usually begin with inspiration in a found material, where she sees the potential to reuse and upcycle it into something more. This is her third year bringing an art piece to Burning Man. This year's piece is called Cardinal Gates.

Ricardo Martinez Herrera (Riikc) is a Mexican artist living and working in Brussels, Belgium. After finishing his MFA in sculpture at the Royal Academy of Art in Brussels, he launched a small technology and communications business. Today, Ricardo draws on these experiences to create work at the intersections of technology and fine art. Ricardo’s artwork spans several mediums, including metalwork; digital art; 3D printing and drawing; painting; and photography. Since he began working with the 3D pen in 2017, Ricardo has emerged as one of the world's preeminent fine artists working in the 3D pen and STEAM education space. In 2022, Ricardo was invited by the organization Biohacking Village, to present his work at the DEFCON hacking conference in Las Vegas, U.S.A. Since this exposition, his interactive installation, “Memento Vivere,” has been displayed at three subsequent sites in Las Vegas: the Mexican Consulate, the “Digital Love: Art + Tech” exhibition at Winchester Cultural Center gallery, and the atrium of the Clark County Sahara West Library. In 2023, Ricardo received a Black Rock City Honorarium to build a sculpture for the 2023 Burning Man event. His was one of only 4 European projects and a total of 15 international projects that were funded. His 25-foot aluminum sculpture entitled “Axolotl: A Spirit Guide” was installed at the event from August 23 to September 5, 2023.

Caroline Kamm is a visual artist, project manager, and fundraiser, who supports artists as they create ambitious installations and public art pieces. In 2024, she was the lead artist of the Black Rock City Honorarium project, "Banana for Scale." This 40-foot-long inflatable banana sculpture brought joy and silliness to the participants at Burning Man. In 2023, she supported the build for "Axolotl: A Spirit Guide," also an Honorarium recipient by lead artist Ricardo Martinez Herrera (Riikc). This year, Caroline is the coordinator for another Burning Man build, "Ozymandias," again by lead artist Riikc. Caroline is contributing to the Ozymandias build through project planning, fundraising, communications, and logistics support.
