Full Scope Workshop for December was a presentation by Public Art Muralist, Asa Kennedy. Asa shared his journey as a muralist and how he got involved in public art. He talked about community engagement and its importance in public art projects.
The discussion was followed by a question-and-answer segment where attendees asked Asa about the topics covered.
Meet Our Speaker!
Asa Kennedy is a self-trained artist and mural painter who has dedicated over 15 years to honing craft.
Asa grew up in the Southwest where murals are a common fixture in the urban landscape. This early exposure influenced his interest in public art and he began painting murals as an assistant to a local mural artist. Since then, Asa has installed murals throughout Oregon, New Mexico, and Nevada. He was a member of the Portland Mural Defense Committee, a group dedicated to writing zoning laws to make mural painting permissible throughout the city.
Asa has led numerous mural projects rooted in education and community, in partnership with Urban Roots, UNR, Be the Change, and the City of Reno. He has also mentored peers on large scale and collaborative murals. Asa inspires to lead more mural projects focusing on youth involvement and community outreach.

Mural was a winning submission for call to artists by the City of Sparks. The call was open, there was no artistic direction, so I was free to design anything. I chose images of mid-century automobiles in accord with Hot August Nights, the annual festival that also holds events on site of the mural. While this project was artist driven, I was careful to consider the community and their history in deciding the content for the project.
