Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy II will host a special ceremony at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign on Wednesday, June 17, at 5 p.m. to mark Juneteenth and honor the legacy of freedom and resilience in the Black community. The iconic landmark will be illuminated in red, black and green to celebrate the cultural significance of Juneteenth and Clark County’s commitment to inclusion and equity.
“Juneteenth is a powerful reminder that the promise of freedom must be actively upheld by every generation,” said Commissioner McCurdy II. “Here in Clark County, we celebrate Juneteenth not just as a holiday, but as a call to action — to build a community where every resident can fully experience the freedom and opportunity this day represents.”
Juneteenth — observed annually on June 19 — commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas learned of their emancipation more than two years after the end of the Civil War. It became a federal holiday in 2021.
