Clark County Commissioner April Becker will host a special ceremony at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, to mark National Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day. The iconic landmark will be illuminated in red to raise awareness of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and support individuals and families affected by them.

“Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders affect thousands of families in our community, often quietly and without the support they deserve,” said Commissioner Becker. “By lighting this sign red, we want every family navigating an FASD diagnosis to know Clark County sees them and stands with them. Awareness is the first step toward better support, better resources and less stigma.”

“When the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign shines red, it sends a powerful message that individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and their families are seen, valued, and supported,” said Heather Morris, president of Nevada Families for FASD Awareness. “By shining a light on FASD, we hope to inspire greater recognition, reduce stigma, and remind every family affected by FASD that they are not alone.”

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders affect roughly 1 in 20 school-age children in the United States, according to Nevada Families for FASD Awareness. The disorders are lifelong and can affect learning, memory, social interaction and cognition, though early diagnosis and tailored support can improve quality of life.
