Clark County Family Services and CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, will host a community information night Wednesday, Oct. 14, where experienced foster caregivers and CASA volunteers will share the challenges and life-changing impact of showing up for children in need.
‘Foster & CASA Info Night: Two Paths, One Purpose’ will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at the CASA Connections Center, 212 S. Jones Blvd., in Las Vegas. The evening includes a community dinner and time to hear directly from people doing this work.
Attendees will:
- Learn about the different roles foster caregivers and CASA volunteers play in a child’s life
- Hear real-life perspectives from people doing this work
- Get guidance on how to get started
“Whether someone is ready to open their home or give their time as an advocate, there is a place for them in a child’s life,” said Stacie Dastrup, director of Clark County Family Services. “This night is about hearing from people who are doing the work and finding where you might fit. There is no pressure, just information.”
Just over 3,600 children are in foster care in Clark County. Family Services is working to ensure Child Haven, the County’s emergency shelter, is a last resort placement. Children belong in homes with loving caregivers as they heal from trauma. Family Services estimates the County needs at least 200 more regular licensed foster homes to meet demand. The County especially needs caregivers who can help children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, like autism and ADHD.
