Your chance to spruce up your home landscaping is just a click away. Clark County Environment & Sustainability (DES) and the Arbor Day Foundation are giving away 2,300 trees this fall through the Community Canopy Project.
Beginning Thursday, Sept. 3, at 8 a.m. PDT, the giveaway will be open to residents in all Clark County ZIP codes. Available trees include a variety of drought-resistant species such as Chinese pistache, Elberta peach, Russian pomegranate, southern live oak and more.
“This past August was the hottest August ever for Southern Nevada,” said Robert Burgy, manager of the DES Sustainability Office. “Shade trees help reduce heat, absorb air pollution and can also help lower energy costs when planted strategically around your home.”
How to Get a Free Tree
Go to www.ArborDay.org/ClarkCountyDES to claim a tree. Supplies are limited, so residents are encouraged to act quickly. Most trees will be delivered directly to recipients’ homes. A limited number will also be available for pickup on a first-come, first-served basis at Commissioner Michael Naft’s annual Fall Fest at Laurelwood Park on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m.
About the Community Canopy Project
Part of Clark County DES’s Stay Cool Clark County initiative, the Community Canopy Project delivers more than 4,500 trees annually to Clark County residents to plant in their yards. Together, these trees help expand Clark County’s “urban forest,” providing much-needed shade for years to come, particularly in neighborhoods most affected by the urban heat island effect.
Now in its third year, the Community Canopy Project has given away nearly 9,000 trees to Southern Nevada residents...and counting.
