Commissioner Naft Issues Statement on NSPCA Decision to Turn Operations Over to Humane Network

The board of directors of the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has decided to turn operations of the embattled animal welfare group over to the Reno-based Humane Network.

Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft, who has been in communications with members of the group over the last few months and who last week requested a review by the Nevada Attorney General, today issued this statement:

"The Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) is of critical importance to our community.  We need them to function in a safe, reliable manner. While I know that the decision was difficult, I applaud the NSPCA Board of Directors for their vote in support of a resolution to turn control of the organization over to the Humane Network, a non-profit organization that helps shelters and animal service agencies.  I strongly believe that this fresh start is an important step in restarting this vital community service."

"I am confident that the office of the Nevada Attorney General will continue to fully and fairly investigate all complaints filed with their office," said Naft, who wrote a letter to the Attorney General stating that he had "recently received information that I believe would benefit from a review by your office. It is critical that the fiduciary responsibilities of nonprofit boards in the State of Nevada are observed to the highest extent."

The shelter, located at 4800 W. Dewey Dr., near Decatur Boulevard and Russell Road, is in Naft's County Commission district.

"I will be closely watching the transition process and stand ready to assist," Naft said. "Together, we must ensure our no-kill animal sanctuary has the resources needed to succeed in its mission of finding homes for the animals where they will be treated, cherished, and appreciated as members of the family." Humane Network is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), organization that helps non-profit animal welfare organizations, shelters and animal services agencies dramatically and responsibly increase animal lifesaving and create sustainable results. It provides personalized consulting, practical information, model programs, and networking opportunities.
