While many anglers enjoy fishing, some may not be aware of the consequences of improperly disposing of their fishing lines and hooks. These have contributed to untold numbers of injuries (some fatal), to waterfowl and other assorted birds/animals, including pets. Some of the impacted species are endangered/protected, creating a problem from a conservation standpoint.
When angler discards are left scattered along the ground, they often become entangled on the wings and feet of birds. Hooks have been found imbedded in the eyes, bills, and bodies of various species, including the pets of several park visitors who had to take their companions to the vet.
Wildlife has no one to help them. The consequences of their entanglements have resulted in drownings, broken wings/limbs, loss of appendages, infections; and slow, prolonged deaths.
Animal Protection Affiliates, a grassroots organization, is among those volunteer-based groups that has conducted clean-ups, on-site treatment, and transport of impacted species.
Regardless of various efforts, it is imperative that our community cooperate by ensuring that no trash is left behind after visiting a local park or fishing at a watering hole. Personal responsibility can prevent suffering and save lives.
