Exhibition: April 2 – May 18
Reception: Friday, April 20, 6-8 PM
Students from the College of Southern Nevada and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas have joined to present "Object Builders of the Future Unite: The Sequel," a group exhibit curated by College of Southern Nevada Associate Professor Keith Conley and UNLV Assistant Professor Emily Kennerk. The exhibit opens April 2 with an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 20 at the Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. On First Friday, April 6 and May 4, attendees can park at the Government Center, view the exhibit and then take a free shuttle to other First Friday venues. The exhibit continues through May 18.
The exhibit is the second Rotunda Gallery installation to feature student artists from CSN’s 3-D Design and Beginning Sculpture classes, and UNLV’s Intermediate and Advanced Sculpture classes. Students will present ambitious works from simple materials such as wood, cardboard, paper, and plaster. The works transcend the simplicity of the materials used to construct them.
Conley and Kennerk, both sculptors, are especially excited about the work being produced in three dimensions at their schools. The emergence of 3D Fundamentals as a course requirement at both schools for fine art majors is a recent development. They both comment that design fundamentals, including form, volume, and topography will be a strong foundation for these emerging artists, no matter how they ultimately focus their art practice. With the emergence of installation and media based practices as well as public art opportunities, an ability to conceive and create in three dimensions is an essential skill for all working artists.
