“Drone Series” is a new exhibit by Christopher Tsouras of mixed media photography simulating images caught by unmanned aerial vehicles. The artwork will be on display from Tuesday, August 13 through Friday, October 4 at the Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, just north of Desert Inn Road. An artist reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 16.

Tsouras’ artwork reflects his appreciation of 19th century traditional landscape photography, and the work of “New Topographics” photographers of the late 20th century; however, he employs a much more tactile approach in this series, collaging the photographs onto panels covered in plaster, asphalt and concrete. Digitally the artist has also added an atmospheric quality to the images, making them grainy with varying degrees of focus to look as if they were caught by surveillance equipment.

The photographs of stark desert, urban and industrial landscapes from around the Las Vegas Valley bear an ominous likeness to images captured in the area of the world where the War on Terror has focused, and where the use of drones for reconnaissance and armed strikes was popularized.

Las Vegas artist Christopher Tsouras, originally of Northern Arizona, has been employed for the past 22 years by the College of Southern Nevada, where he instructs Art Studio and Art History courses. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from UNLV, and his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison. As a professional artist Christopher’s artwork has been exhibited widely throughout the United States and in Europe and has received numerous awards and honors. His artwork is also included in public and private collections and has been featured in varying publications. His artwork reflects a meticulous dedication to photographic processes and is expansive in its intellectual and conceptual breadth.
