Artist reception on Friday, January 23 from 5:30-7:30pm

D.K. Sole’s "or, Some Time Ago" is a pedestrian’s journey documented through small, wall-hung sculpture. It will be on view from Tuesday, January 20 through Friday, March 13, 2015 at Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, just north of Desert Inn Road. An artist reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 23.

The artist creates her miniature sculptures from discarded items she finds as she walks along the streets of Clark County: nails, erasers, bottle tops, etc. Seeing scrap items as having their own temperaments and personalities, the artist lets them mingle in her studio until certain items seem to collaborate with each other. Sole then bonds the objects by manipulating them with her fingertips and tweezers, sometimes attaching galvanized-wire armatures. Over one hundred of these assemblage sculptures will be displayed along Winchester Gallery’s walls in irregularly-shaped clusters or "islands," linked by thread.

The exhibit’s title comes from Mary Theresa Vidal’s nineteenth-century novel, "Bengala: or, Some Time Ago," a book that would never have been written if the author hadn’t traveled and picked up things along the way. Sole highlights the overlooked treasures she picks up along the streets in a city where the life of a pedestrian is both difficult and dangerous. Lifting debris from the ground and placing it on the walls of the intimately-sized gallery, the artist hopes to prompt viewers to examine the groupings of broken street-scraps as they might scan a crowd of faces.

D.K. Sole is an Australian-born emerging artist, working mainly in assemblage and sculpture. After a decade of neglecting her visual arts training in favor of literature, she found her old interests revived when she moved to Las Vegas and began work at the Marjorie Barrick Museum under artist Alisha Kerlin. Sole is a graduate of Box Hill Institute and the Victorian College of the Arts. Her most recent exhibits have been shown locally at Gaia Flowers, Marjorie Barrick Museum and MCQ Fine Art.
