March 19 through May 10, 2013
Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89121
Artist reception: Friday, March 22, 2013 - 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Las Vegas artist Krystal Ramirez will present photos, video and drawings in the exhibit “I’m Sorry, We Lied” beginning Tuesday, March 19 and continuing through Friday, May 10 at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, just north of Desert Inn Road. An artist reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 22 at the gallery.
“I’m Sorry, We Lied” explores the intimacy missing from relationships built through online personas with the help of telecommunications software and devices. Ramirez reminds viewers of the delicate nuances of face-to-face interaction by stripping away the control that communication technology gives users to edit their identities.
To do this, the artist removed herself and her models’ self awareness by positioning cameras on timers in their bedrooms to capture their images as they slept. The cameras photographed each individual over three to five nights, collecting between 150 and 400 total photographs. Layers of drawings present overheard/overseen phrases repeated again and again through the fading art of handwriting in a reminder of the methods used to educate or punish school children. A video projected in the gallery presents an intimate portrait of an individual in conversation in which a range of verbal and non-verbal cues is highlighted.
Ramirez received her bachelor’s degree in fine art from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2009, and she has exhibited in group and solo shows locally and internationally. Most recently she presented locally in solo shows at Kleven Contemporary and Gamma Gamma Gallery as well as the Aria Resort, Marjorie Barrick Museum and Richard Tam Alumni Center at UNLV. She also is a freelance photographer and works for local Las Vegas companies such as Seven Magazine, Downtown Project, Downtown Cocktail Room and Mundo Restraurant.
